Foord Asset Management has approached financial education in a particularly innovative way. Last year, the firm published an illustrated book for children aged four to seven highlighting the basic concepts of investing.
The book, written by Foord’s communications manager Christina Castle and illustrated by designer Carla Kreuser, is titled More than Enough. It shows a family of squirrels collecting acorns, making sure that they have enough not only to enjoy and share now, but to save for the future.
The book has been available free of charge, either as a hard copy or as a pdf that can be downloaded from Foord’s website.
It has now also been translated into isiXhosa, isiZulu and Afrikaans.
‘Foord is passionate about teaching children (and their parents) the importance of investing for the long term,’ said Castle. ‘Because we wanted to make this book accessible to all South African children it was essential that the book be translated. Children need to read in their home languages.’
The firm has been distributing the book to libraries and schools throughout South Africa. It has also partnered with a local non-profit organisation to get 40 000 copies to learners in Grade 1 and Grade R across the Western Cape.
