The top 20 countries for billionaires

Billionaire wealth reached $10.2tn at the end of July, according to a UBS report, as the ultra-wealthy innovators and disruptors prospered in the turbulent conditions. We look at where the majority of them are located.

Billionaire wealth reached $10.2tn (£7.9tn) at the end of July according to UBS’ latest Billionaires Insights report.

The annual analysis of 2,000 people showed that billionaires had been on a ‘V-shaped’ recovery with wealth increasing by 20% from the $8.5tn recorded last year.

Josef Stadler, head of global family office at UBS, said: ‘A cohort of billionaire innovators and disruptors, active in tech, healthcare and industry, have contributed to reshaping the economy.

‘Covid-19 accelerated this trend dramatically. By demonstrating the value of the digital world they helped to create, they were able to decisively pull ahead of the pack as they increased their wealth while others’ fell.’

The report also revealed that there had been a surge in philanthropy among the cohort, with $7.2bn donated to Covid-related causes by 209 individuals between March and June.
